AIT-UNEP Review Workshop on Vulnerability Assessment of Freshwater Resources
AIT President Said Irandoust took part in the closing ceremony of the AIT-UNEP review workshop on "Vulnerability Assessment of Freshwater Resources" held at AIT during 12-14 September 2007. Attending the event were representatives from 10 participating countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam. Participants of partner organizations from Peking University, Mongolian Water Institute, MRC, Lao National Mekong Committee, UNEP and AIT were also present.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Hiroshi Nishimiya, Deputy Regional Director, UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), Thailand. The next Workshop on Joint Asia-Africa Water Vulnerability Assessment will be held in Bangkok during 16-18 October 2007.
Dr. Mukund Babel led this important initiative from AIT and took the opportunity to meet with Professor Dr. Mohammad Hamid from Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU), Kabul, Afghanistan, one of the participants and reviewers of the workshop, and followed up on some of the initiatives that were discussed between AIT and KPU during AIT President's visit to Afghanistan. Possibilities of academic and development cooperation between AIT and KPU were discussed and it was decided that as a first step the collaborative activities will be related to "water resources", which can further be expanded to include other areas and expertise available at AIT. It was agreed that AIT will prepare and send the draft MoU for consideration by KPU, and KPU will send the documents related to needs assessment recently prepared by KPU which will form the basis of the MoU. It was agreed to initially launch the cooperation through short training courses in Afghanistan by AIT faculty members, and Professor Hamid has agreed to provide a list of key required topics on which 1-2 week long training programs could be arranged. The development of joint proposals by AIT and KPU for possible funding from the World Bank, ADB and other donor agencies active in Afghanistan would be a another way to develop collaborative activities.
